When the AI competition heats up, a single strategic move can change the entire game — and now it’s Meta’s turn.
Meta has secured one of the world’s leading AI experts, taking a bold step in the global race for top talent. Shenjia Zhao, a former senior scientist at OpenAI and one of the key contributors to ChatGPT, has joined Meta as Chief Scientist at the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs. Mark Zuckerberg calls this move a clear signal of Meta’s ambitious vision for the future.
According to Business Insider, Zhao, who played a major role in developing GPT-4 and other data-driven projects at OpenAI, will work closely with Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI and Meta’s new Chief AI Officer. This decision is part of Meta’s multi-billion-dollar investment in foundational AI models and next-generation research.
But Meta didn’t stop there. The company also brought in three additional researchers who previously helped establish OpenAI’s Zurich office and have prior experience at Google DeepMind. In short, the new Superintelligence Labs team is a powerhouse, blending top talent from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
Why This Matters in the AI Talent War
The global competition for AI expertise is fiercer than ever. Industry experts like Naveen Rao from Databricks emphasize that only a handful of companies worldwide have the capability to build cutting-edge AI models.
However, this aggressive approach isn’t without criticism. Demis Hassabis of DeepMind remarked that while Meta isn’t leading the frontier yet, this move could change the landscape. Meanwhile, Sam Altman of OpenAI called Meta’s sky-high offers “crazy,” warning that excessive focus on money might harm organizational culture.
Meta’s Strategy: Aiming for Superintelligence
Meta’s hiring spree signals its intent to lead the next era of artificial intelligence. With experts who shaped OpenAI’s GPT-4, Meta is investing heavily to develop superintelligent systems and foundational models that could redefine the tech industry.
