The ChatGPT mobile application has become one of the fastest-growing AI products in history. Since its launch in 2023, the app has generated over $2 billion in revenue, averaging $2.91 per installation worldwide, according to a recent report by TechCrunch citing data from Appfigures.
ChatGPT Outpaces AI Rivals by a Huge Margin
Spending on ChatGPT across iOS and Android is estimated to be nearly 30 times higher than the combined user spending on competing apps such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
In 2025 alone, the ChatGPT app has already earned $1.35 billion, marking an incredible 673% increase compared to the $174 million it made during the same period in 2024 (January to July). Its average monthly revenue has soared to $193 million, up from just $25 million per month a year earlier.
Revenue Per Download: ChatGPT Leads the Pack
Appfigures data highlights that global spending per download is:
-
ChatGPT – $2.91
-
Claude – $2.55
-
Grok – $0.75
-
Copilot – $0.28
In the United States, ChatGPT’s spending per download climbs to an impressive $10, making the country its largest market with a 38% share of global revenue. Germany follows with 5.3%, reflecting strong adoption in Europe.
Grok Struggles to Compete
While Grok, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, is considered a major competitor, its mobile revenues have lagged far behind. Since the beginning of 2025, Grok has earned only $25.6 million, which equals just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s mobile revenue.
On a monthly basis, Grok’s revenue averages $3.6 million, compared to ChatGPT’s $193 million. This massive gap highlights just how dominant ChatGPT has become in the AI app space.
Downloads: ChatGPT Hits 690 Million Installs
Beyond revenue, ChatGPT also outperforms rivals in download volume. The app has been installed around 690 million times, while Grok sits at 39.5 million installs.
In 2025 alone, ChatGPT reached 318 million new downloads 2.8 times higher than the 113 million installs recorded in 2024.
The largest share of installs comes from India (13.7%), while the United States follows at 10.3%. On average, ChatGPT now enjoys 45 million new downloads per month, a 180% growth compared to early 2024.
Why ChatGPT Dominates the AI App Market
Several factors contribute to ChatGPT’s continued dominance:
-
Early market entry in 2023, compared to Grok’s late launch in late 2023/early 2025
-
Strong global brand recognition from OpenAI
-
Higher user trust and visibility on app stores
-
Effective monetization through subscriptions and premium features
Although revenues from web subscriptions and API access are not included in these app-only figures, the numbers clearly show that ChatGPT is far ahead of its competitors in both adoption and monetization.
